The Journey to Doing Things Differently: How MMT Consultation Was Born

Updated: Feb 17

Original Narration- Marie Michel Thermil

Hi! I’m Marie Michel, and I founded MMT Consultation out of a deep desire to redefine success—both for myself and for the people I work with. After years of following a well-paved path toward traditional markers of success, I realized that I was living someone else’s definition of what it means to “make it.” This is a little insight into how I stepped away from that, reclaimed my autonomy, and became committed to helping others do the same.

Redefining Success

From a young age, I always knew I wanted to help others. I wasn’t sure how at first, but it was clear that making a positive impact on people’s lives would be central to my career. I was always fascinated by the intricate dance between a person and their ecosystem and I grew interested in finding ways to improve that relationship. So, after studying sociology and psychology, followed by a Graduate Diploma in Organizational Development, I spent years working across industries—public, private, and non-profit. I wore many hats: learning and development (L&D) specialist, organizational development coordinator, change management practitioner, as well as workshop facilitator, among other things. I worked hard, pushed through the long hours, and tackled countless projects.

But something still felt off.

Like many people, I spent years checking all the boxes—measuring my worth through external accomplishments and striving to meet expectations. I pushed myself relentlessly to prove that I belonged, trying to show that I could succeed like anyone else despite the challenges along my path. But as I climbed the ladder, I kept losing pieces of myself in the process. The goals I once pursued with enthusiasm started to weigh me down, and I found myself disconnected and running on empty. I spent most of my time being tasked with administrative minutiae, working hard and staying busy but not really being able to contribute in the ways I knew I was capable of.

I realized it was time for something different. I needed to redefine success on my own terms and start living in alignment with it.

A New Approach to Work and Life

As a neurodivergent Black woman navigating various work environments, I’ve always been keenly aware of the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). My work has always been about helping people, but I began to realize that the systems I was working within weren’t allowing me to create the kind of meaningful change I envisioned. I wanted to do more than just follow protocols and meet arbitrary deadlines—I wanted to help others find fulfillment and purpose in their own lives and work.

That’s why I decided to do differently and create something new. I left behind the traditional 9-to-5 structure and started MMT Consultation, a business where collaboration is at the core. By leveraging each person’s unique strengths, I aim to guide individuals and organizations toward meaningful growth. In alignment with their own version of success, I foster connections and empowerment through a holistic and decolonial approach.

Helping You Redefine Success

I deeply understand what it’s like to feel stuck in a career that doesn’t allow you to fully play to your strengths and expand your potential. I’ve been there, dedicating time and energy to meet expectations, only to feel unfulfilled and stuck in routines that didn’t resonate. I also know firsthand what it’s like to feel unsure of the next step. But thanks to all this, I have a better understanding of how to move past these obstacles, and how empowering it is to create a life aligned with your true self.

Through MMT Consultation, my mission is to provide the space and support you need to figure out what success means for you. My role isn’t to prescribe a path, but rather to partner with you in uncovering your motivations, reflecting on your relationship with work, and embracing what makes you uniquely you. Together, we’ll explore the factors that can transform your life and career into something more fulfilling.

Fostering personal development doesn’t just benefit individuals—it creates a ripple effect that enhances the health of an organization. When people are aligned with their strengths and feel empowered in their work, the entire organization thrives. Having worked across a variety of sectors, I’ve seen how individual well-being directly influences team dynamics, innovation, and overall organizational success. That’s why, alongside personal consulting, I help organizations foster environments that encourage growth and inclusion through customized trainings, change management, and strategic L&D initiatives.

By supporting both individuals and teams, I aim to help organizations become more aligned with well-being, ensuring that personal growth fuels collective success.

A Partner in Your Exploration

You don’t necessarly need to blow up your life overnight or start a new business to feel fulfilled. Sometimes, radical change begins with the smallest of shifts—making space for what lights you up and releasing what no longer serves you. It took me time to get here and even if I've found a path that suits me better now, the learning never stops. That’s why if I can support others somewhere along their road, it would be my honor to do so.

So, what do you say? Let's journey together!
